MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Reliable Production For Critical Applications

Inconel 600 bar and rod are produced from high-quality alloy ingots using controlled melting and remelting processes. Depending on the required quality level and application, the ingots may be produced through VIM + ESR (Vacuum Induction Melting + Electroslag Remelting), while VIM + VAR (Vacuum Arc Remelting) can be selected for applications requiring higher cleanliness and tighter metallurgical control. VIM provides controlled alloy chemistry, while ESR or VAR further improves ingot quality and solidification control. Regardless of the melting route, the finished Inconel 600 bar and rod are supplied in accordance with the applicable material standards and specified chemical and mechanical requirements.

01

Raw material preparation

Nickel, chromium, and iron charge materials are selected and weighed to meet the required UNS N06600 chemistry with controlled impurities.

02

Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM)

The charge is melted under vacuum to limit gas pickup and maintain tight control of composition and melt cleanliness.

03

Electroslag Remelting (ESR)

Where specified, ESR refines the electrode through a molten slag layer to reduce inclusions and improve ingot uniformity.

04

Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR)

For demanding requirements, VAR remelts under a controlled vacuum arc to improve ingot cleanliness and structural consistency.

05

Hot forging and rolling

The ingot is converted to billet, then forged or hot rolled to the required bar section with controlled working.

06

Heat treatment

Annealing develops the specified balance of strength, ductility, and workability according to the applicable material specification and ordered condition.

07

Cold working and finishing

Cold drawing, peeling or centerless grinding provides tighter dimensions and improved surface finish for bright bar and precision rod.

08

Final inspection

Chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, and surface condition are verified, and the agreed inspection documentation is completed before the material is released.

MANUFACTURING CAPABILITY

Advanced Production For Nickel Alloy Products

Southerly Alloy supplies Inconel 600 bar and rod across the common product forms and manufacturing conditions called for in ASTM B166 — hot-worked, cold-worked, annealed, and as-worked material in round, square, hex, flat, and forged sections. Diameter, cut length, straightness, tolerance, heat-treatment condition, and surface finish are confirmed against your purchase requirements before production. For precision machining applications, cold-drawn, peeled, or centerless-ground bar provides a controlled starting surface and dimensional condition.
