PRODUCT OVERVIEW

About Monel 400 Bar and Rod

Monel 400 bar and rod serve pumps, valves, shafts, and fasteners exposed to seawater, hydrofluoric acid systems and reducing chemical media. Monel 400 (UNS N04400, W.Nr. 2.4360) pairs roughly two-thirds nickel with copper in one solid-solution alloy.

Southerly Alloy supplies round bar, rod, and finished sections to ASTM B164 and ASME SB164 in hot-worked, annealed, stress-relieved, and cold-drawn conditions. Where higher strength is required, Monel K-500 bar is quoted as a companion grade.

Quotations answer with conditions, size, and document commitments, not vague lead times.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Reliable Production For Critical Applications

Monel 400 bar and rod are produced from refined nickel and cathode copper melted into the UNS N04400 balance. Each heat is worked and heat-treated to the ordered ASTM B164 condition, with composition and test results recorded against the heat number.

01

Charge Preparation

Refined nickel and copper are weighed to the UNS N04400 balance, with impurity limits set by ASTM B164.

02

Melting

The charge is melted in induction or electric-arc furnaces under practices that limit gas pickup and oxide content.

03

Casting

Molten metal is cast into ingots with solidification controls that limit segregation across the section.

04

Hot Working

Ingots are forged and rolled into billets and bars, refining the cast structure as the section is reduced.

05

Heat Treatment

Annealing or stress relief is applied to the ordered condition to set strength, ductility and machinability.

06

Cold Finishing

Drawing, peeling or centreless grinding brings cold-drawn bar to final diameter, tolerance and surface.

07

Surface Preparation

Pickling, polishing or rough turning delivers the finish your drawing calls for.

08

Inspection and Release

Chemistry, tensile properties, dimensions and surface are verified against the purchase specification before release.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Strict Quality Control From Production To Delivery

Monel 400 bar leaves the works only after the ordered ASTM B164 requirements are demonstrated on the heat. Composition is checked by spectrometer, mechanical tests are run on the delivered condition, and dimensions are checked against your drawing. Records stay with the material for incoming verification.

01

Material Verification

Spectrometer analysis confirms the UNS N04400 balance before bar enters production.

02

Dimensional Inspection

Diameter, straightness, and length are measured to the applicable B164 tolerance class.

03

Testing and Inspection

Tensile, hardness, and, where specified, UT or PMI are run on the ordered condition.

04

Certification and Traceability

EN 10204 3.1 documents link every bar back to its heat number.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Technical Specifications

Detailed technical information including chemical composition, mechanical properties, standards and available dimensions.

Chemical Composition

The limits below follow ASTM B164 for UNS N04400 bar and rod, with nickel as the balance of the melt. Tighter impurity ranges can be melted if your specification calls for them. The mill test certificate governs final acceptance.

Element Content
Nickel (Ni) plus Cobalt (Co) 63.0% min.
Copper (Cu) 28.0–34.0%
Iron (Fe) 2.5% max.
Manganese (Mn) 2.0% max.
Carbon (C) 0.30% max.
Silicon (Si) 0.50% max.
Sulfur (S) 0.024% max.

Mechanical Properties

Minimums are taken from ASTM B164 for UNS N04400 rod and bar and change with condition and section size. Cold-drawn as-worked values apply to rounds under 1/2 inch; stress-relieved values cover 1/2 to 3-1/2 inch rounds. Confirm the ordered condition at quotation.

Condition / Section Tensile Strength, min. Yield Strength (0.2%), min. Elongation, min.
Hot-worked, rounds to 305 mm (12 in.) ≥80 ksi (552 MPa) ≥40 ksi (276 MPa) 30%
Hot-worked, annealed, all sizes ≥70 ksi (480 MPa) ≥25 ksi (170 MPa) 35%
Cold-worked, stress-relieved, rounds 12.7–88.9 mm (1/2–3-1/2 in.) ≥87 ksi (600 MPa) ≥60 ksi (415 MPa) 20%
Cold-worked, as-worked, rounds under 12.7 mm (1/2 in.) ≥110 ksi (760 MPa) ≥85 ksi (585 MPa) 8%

Requirements above follow the ASTM B164 mechanical tables; the applicable edition and the ordered condition decide final acceptance.

Physical Properties

Typical room-temperature values below support design calculations rather than acceptance testing. Monel 400 is only slightly ferromagnetic at ambient temperature, and the Curie range sits just above normal working temperatures.
