Technical & Procurement FAQ
Engineering Material Selection Guide
| Service Environment | Recommended Material | Selection Reason | Potential Risk of Incorrect Selection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seawater, offshore platforms, subsea systems | Inconel 625 | Excellent resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion. | Rapid localized corrosion and reduced service life. |
| High-temperature oxidation environments | Inconel 600 / Inconel 625 | Stable mechanical properties and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. | Scaling, oxidation damage and thermal degradation. |
| Acid processing systems and chemical plants | Incoloy 825 / Inconel 625 | Strong resistance to sulfuric, phosphoric and mixed-acid environments. | Corrosion cracking and leakage. |
| Sour gas and offshore oil & gas production | Inconel 625 | Excellent resistance to H₂S-containing environments and chloride attack. | Stress corrosion cracking and premature failure. |
| Marine equipment and saltwater systems | Monel 400 | Excellent seawater corrosion resistance with lower alloy cost. | Material over-specification or insufficient strength. |
| Extremely aggressive chemical media | Hastelloy C-276 | Superior resistance to highly oxidizing and reducing chemicals. | Accelerated corrosion and unexpected shutdowns. |
| High-strength aerospace and turbine components | Inconel 718 | Higher mechanical strength through precipitation hardening. | Insufficient strength under heavy loads. |
Engineering Selection Summary
For mixed corrosion environments involving seawater, chlorides, elevated temperatures and offshore exposure, Inconel 625 is often the most balanced engineering choice. When the application is dominated by a specific condition such as strong acids, extreme chemical attack or very high mechanical loads, alternative alloys such as Incoloy 825, Hastelloy C-276 or Inconel 718 may provide a better fit.
