Monel K-500 Bar and Rod

High-strength age-hardened nickel-copper bar and rod for marine shafts, fasteners and oil and gas equipment.

Grade: Monel K-500 UNS N05500 Werkstoff Nr. 2.4375
Aluminium and Titanium Verified

Al and Ti are reported on every EN 10204 3.1 certificate, so the age-hardening response is documented, not assumed.

NACE Hardness Control

Age-hardened bar is released inside the 24–35 HRC band for NACE MR0175 sour-gas service when your order requires it.

Condition Matched to Service

Annealed, age-hardened or cold-drawn stock is selected against your shaft, fastener or downhole duty before cutting.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

About Monel K-500 Bar and Rod

Monel K-500 bar and rod carry the seawater corrosion resistance of the Monel 400 family into load-bearing parts. Aluminium and titanium let the UNS N05500 balance gain strength through age hardening rather than cold work alone.

Southerly Alloy supplies round bar, rod and finished sections to ASTM B865 and ASME SB865 in annealed, age-hardened and cold-drawn conditions. Pump shafts, fasteners and downhole tools are the usual destinations for this higher-strength nickel-copper bar.

PRODUCT FEATURES

Key Features of Monel K-500 Bar and Rod

Monel K-500 is a precipitation-hardened nickel-copper alloy that adds aluminium and titanium to the Monel 400 base for roughly three times the yield strength. Southerly Alloy supplies UNS N05500 bar and rod to ASTM B865 in annealed, age-hardened and cold-drawn conditions, with custom sizes, NACE hardness control and mill test documentation. Marine shafts, high-strength fasteners and oil and gas tools are typical buyers of this bar.

Monel K-500

Strength Through Age Hardening

Aluminium and titanium form hardening precipitates that lift yield strength to about 100 ksi, roughly three times the Monel 400 level.

01

Resistance to Reducing Media

Handles hydrofluoric acid, other non-oxidizing acids and alkalis under controlled service conditions.

02

Seawater and Salt-Solution Resistance

Performs in flowing seawater where many stainless grades pit or crack; review stagnant service for crevice risk.

03

Essentially Non-Magnetic

The alloy stays low in magnetic permeability at ambient temperature, which protects downhole survey accuracy.

04

Fatigue and Wear Resistance

Hardened bar resists cyclic loading and galling in shafts, stems and fastener threads.

05

Condition Range

Supplied annealed, age-hardened or cold-drawn to match the ASTM B865 strength tables.

06

Size and Section Flexibility

Round, square, hex, flat and forged bar run from stock sizes up to large sections.

07

Certification and Traceability

EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates with heat numbers travel with every delivery.

08
WHY CHOOSE US

Why Choose Monel K-500

Your Monel K-500 enquiry reaches the team that controls nickel-copper melting, aging and finishing on one site. We fix the heat-treatment condition to your duty, so strength, hardness and documentation promises stay realistic. One contact owns your order from quotation to shipment.

01

Heat numbers, EN 10204 3.1 certificates and PMI records are compiled per delivery.

03

Flexible Supply

One bar or one container load runs through the same qualified nickel-copper route.

04

Responsive Service

Quotations answer with condition, size and document commitments, not vague lead times.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Reliable Production For Critical Applications

Monel K-500 bar and rod are made from refined nickel and copper melted with aluminium and titanium into the UNS N05500 balance. Each heat is worked, solution-annealed and aged to the ordered condition, with test results recorded against the heat number.

01

Charge Preparation

Refined nickel and copper are weighed to the UNS N05500 balance, with aluminium and titanium added for age hardening.

02

Melting

The charge is melted in induction or electric-arc furnaces under practices that limit gas pickup and oxide content.

03

Casting

Molten metal is cast into ingots with solidification controls that limit segregation across the section.

04

Hot Working

Ingots are forged and rolled into billets and bars, refining the cast structure as the section is reduced.

05

Solution Annealing

Bars are heated and water-quenched to dissolve the hardening phase before aging is applied.

06

Aging

Controlled low-temperature aging forms Ni3(Ti,Al) precipitates that set strength and hardness.

07

Cold Finishing

Drawing, peeling or centreless grinding brings aged bar to final diameter, tolerance and surface.

08

Inspection and Release

Chemistry, hardness, tensile properties and dimensions are verified against the purchase specification before release.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Strict Quality Control From Production To Delivery

Monel K-500 bar leaves the works only after the ordered ASTM B865 requirements are demonstrated on the heat. Composition is checked by spectrometer, and hardness, tensile and dimensional tests run on the delivered condition. Records stay with the material for incoming verification.

01

Material Verification

Spectrometer analysis confirms the UNS N05500 balance and reports aluminium and titanium before bar enters production.

02

Dimensional Inspection

Diameter, straightness and length are measured to the applicable B865 tolerance class.

03

Testing and Inspection

Tensile, hardness and, where specified, UT or PMI are run on the ordered condition.

04

Certification and Traceability

EN 10204 3.1 documents link every bar back to its heat number.

APPLICATIONS

Engineered For Demanding Industries

Monel K-500 bar is specified where seawater, non-oxidizing acids or alkalis defeat stainless steels and Monel 400 lacks the strength. Most K-500 bar work reaches us through marine and oil and gas projects. Review age-hardened SCC risk for stagnant or sour service with our engineers.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Technical Specifications

Detailed technical information including chemical composition, mechanical properties, standards and available dimensions.

Chemical Composition

The limits below follow ASTM B865 for UNS N05500 bar and rod, with nickel as the balance of the melt. Aluminium and titanium are the age-hardening additions that separate K-500 from Monel 400. The mill test certificate governs final acceptance.

Element Content
Nickel (Ni) plus Cobalt (Co) 63.0% min.
Copper (Cu) 27.0–33.0%
Aluminium (Al) 2.30–3.15%
Titanium (Ti) 0.35–0.85%
Iron (Fe) 2.0% max.
Manganese (Mn) 1.5% max.
Carbon (C) 0.25% max.
Silicon (Si) 0.50% max.
Sulfur (S) 0.010% max.

Mechanical Properties

Minimums are taken from ASTM B865 for UNS N05500 rod and bar and change with condition and section size. Annealed stock is soft and formable; age-hardened stock reaches full strength for direct assembly. Confirm the ordered condition at quotation.

Condition Tensile Strength, min. Yield Strength (0.2%), min. Elongation, min.
Annealed (Condition A) ≥90 ksi (621 MPa) ≥40 ksi (276 MPa) 25%
Age-Hardened (Condition AH) ≥140 ksi (965 MPa) ≥100 ksi (690 MPa) 15%

Requirements above follow the ASTM B865 mechanical tables; the applicable edition and the ordered condition decide final acceptance.

Physical Properties

Typical room-temperature values below support design calculations rather than acceptance testing. Monel K-500 is essentially non-magnetic at ambient temperature, which suits downhole and electronic service.
